Akechi Kanna & Akechi Kagura in Los Angeles

This fall, we’re thrilled to welcome 縄師 神凪 Akechi Kanna (x-gender, all pronouns) and 神楽 Akechi Kagura (she/her) to Devil Mask Studio for two special workshops focused on the aesthetics, structure, and soul of Kanna-ryū.

Kanna was inspired to tie by the legendary artist  Akechi Denki, whose influence can still be seen in Kanna’s style. After Denki’s passing in 2005, Kanna continued to develop their craft, incorporating knowledge from traditional and contemporary rope methods – including techniques used by military and police forces in Japan. This blend of classical and modern practices forms the technical backbone of Kanna-ryū.

We believe that rope has no gender or borders, and rope should be for everyone.
It should be fun for both the rigger and the model.

Kanna and Kagura are a queer Japanese rope couple who have been together for over 14 years. Their approach is steeped in connection, emotional intensity, and intentional control. Their style of semenawa is inspired by military and police restraints, drawing inspiration from hojojutsu – rope for martial restraint – and a wide range of influences.

Together, Kanna and Kagura have taught and performed around the world, sharing a style that emphasizes clear communication, shared presence, and a deep attention to detail. Their rope is beautiful – but more importantly, it’s deliberate. Every change in tension, every placement, every breath matters.

What Is Kanna-ryū?

Kanna’s teaching prioritizes clarity, critical thinking, and deep attention to fundamentals. Their workshops aren’t just about learning shapes – they’re about learning how to feel, observe, and respond. They offer not just technique, but the tools for rope that is attuned, intentional, and impactful.

Kanna-ryū is a semenawa-based style that is:

  • Restrictive and highly structured
  • Focused on precision, tension, and immobilization
  • Adaptable to many body types and mobility levels
