hua hua in Los Angeles (Shanghai – London)

hua hua (she/her) is a Shibari artist and founder of Borderline Shibari. She began the first public Shibari events in Shanghai in 2017, facilitating bilingual events to help promote a healthier approach to kink in China.  After running a studio in Shanghai during the pandemic, hua hua left China in 2022 to bring Borderline to a global audience. She has taught numerous workshops and performed in the Americas, Europe and Asia and continues to runs a community online through her Patreon page.

Looking around me I realized that although there is so much beauty in Shibari, it is still so hard for many to access this. Many platforms are still outdated in their presentation of gender roles and sexuality or feel too exclusive. I believe that there are many ways that Shibari can be practiced that can suit your own beliefs and intentions. It can be erotic, it can be aesthetic, it can be emotionally intense, but ultimately rope is just a way for us to explore each other.

Her teaching style is more holistic than systematic, focusing on intention  with a slow mindful pacing in her classes. She does not teach in one particular style, but rather on adapting the tie to meet the needs of everyone involved. To her, ropes are like a bridge between people and cultures, to overcome societal borders in our search for intimate connection.  Beyond her teaching practice, she is passionate about sharing Shibari to a wider public, collaborating with other practices such as fashion, dance and experimental theatre. She mostly works through the medium of film. Her film work presents Shibari art through numerous genre styles from pornography to horror.  She frequently collaborates with artists from other fields such as fashion, dance and experimental theatre to explore the relationship of BDSM with other subcultures.
